European fish auctions 'need development'

Electronic log books are now common across Europe, and typically as many as three quarters of all buyers at an auction can purchase remotely over the internet, according to Pim Visser, president of European Association Fishing Ports and Auctions (EAFPA).

He cited the rise of the PEFA online auction system, the largest in Europe, which allows users to purchase fish from 13 auctions across the continent, from Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy.

The new organization of auctions needs to be taken into account when examining overall market organization and developed further to improve traceability and integration, Visser told IntraFish at the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels.
