Europe’s largest tilapia farm set for relaunch

VitaFish will sell fresh tilapia fillets into French retailer Intermarche and Carrefour in Belgium, beginning April 1.

The company is in talks with Young’s Seafood and Seachill, and retailers ASDA and Tesco, regarding a deal to supply fresh tilapia to the U.K. market.

Discussions are at an advanced stage and “by May we should be on the market in the U.K.,” Joost De Smedt, founder and managing director, told IntraFish.

With a 4,000-metric-ton wholefish capacity, the self-contained broodstock, hatchery, growout, processing and packaging plant will become the largest producer of tilapia in Europe.
