The European Commission is conducting a second consultation on its proposals for a total ban on driftnetting in all EU waters.

The issue was discussed at a meeting at the end of June of the North Sea Advisory Council (NSAC) Executive Committee, where commission officials were present and said the response to its first consultation had been poor and it would be carrying out a second one.

Barrie Deas, chairman of the Demersal Working Group of the NSAC, said the group would welcome a second consultation because there were obviously deficiencies in the first one.
