A 'conditionality' clause laying down the requirement to reduce fleet overcapacity is being written into the revamped Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), which is currently being negotiated.
European Union (EU) Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki spelled this out in a question-and-answer session on Euronews i-talk last week.
She gave her comments in reply to a question from a Greenpeace representative who asked Damanaki what the Commission would do about excess fleet capacity now that its proposal for quota trading to reduce the fleet was “off the table.”
