Pelagic operators in the European Union, represented by the Northern Pelagic Working Group (NPWG), welcomed EU Commissioner Maria Damanaki’s announcement trade sanctions against the Faroe are justified.
The Faroese stance on Atlanto-Scandian herring is contrary to responsible stock management and the EU is now considering closing ports to Faroese vessels.
“We welcome this as a move in the right direction," said Gerard van Balsfoort, chairman at NPWG. "As the legislation allows for associated species, the commission must include mackerel at this stage because the fishery is essentially a mixed fishery.
