The European Food Safety Administration (EFSA) is recommending limiting consumption of fish species with high methylmercury content, such as tuna, pike or swordfish, in order to efficiently achieve the benefits of fish while minimizing the risks associated with exposure to methylmercury.
According to analysis from the EFSA Scientific Committee, requested by the European Commission, certain population groups, in particular toddlers and children aged three to 10, reached tolerable weekly intake (TWI) for methylmercury before they reached intake levels that brought nutritional benefits.
