Less than 24 hours after the failure of another EU/Norway and Iceland/Faroe Islands round of meetings to seek resolution to the impasse over the disputed mackerel stock in the north east Atlantic, the president of the European Parliament today officially signed a document intended to punish Iceland in particular for its refusal to work toward a solution on the shared mackerel stock.

Among other penalties and restrictions, the fully ratified trade sanctions could would be dramatic: In 2011, a total of 304,955 metric tons of whitefish was shipped from Iceland to the EU, while the Faroe Islands supplied 71,512 metric tons.
