A free trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and Canada is close to ratification, and will remove 99 percent of all tariffs between the two economies.

The EU–Canada Trade Agreement (CETA) will need to be approved by the Council and the European Parliament, but if it goes ahead fish exports from Canada to the EU are expected to increase by 16 percent, according to the latest report from the European Market Observatory for Fishery and Aquaculture products (EUMOFA).

A FTA of this kind could create difficulties for UK lobster fishermen, who are already facing problems with heavy imports of frozen Canadian lobsters that are sold in discount supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl at heavily discounted prices of as low as £5 (€6.80/$7.70).
