After another disappointing Alaskan harvest and subsequent skyrocketing prices, farmed salmon has become an unlikely hero, European buyers told IntraFish.

With prices of Alaskan sockeye salmon "all over the place" high prices of farmed salmon are ensuring sockeye is not completely "priced out of the market,” Thomas Canetti, CEO at French firm Sovintex, said.

“Farmed salmon is getting very expensive and that is kind of saving wild salmon,” Canetti told IntraFish.

“If we had these kind of prices with cheap farmed salmon then that would definitely price the wild salmon out of the market," he said, branding the season for wild salmon "disappointing."
