The list, released Wednesday as part of transparency requirements of a newly signed environmental law, showed more than 1.1 million fish worth millions of dollars escaped in 2006.
The list is the first from the directorate naming companies responsible for escapes.
Mid-sized salmon farmers Sjolaks, Sjotroll Havbruk, Mortenlaks and Seafarm Invest suffered the worst total losses of farmed salmon in 2006. Marine Harvest, the largest farmed salmon producer in Norway, reported the fifth-highest amount of losses. Combined, the five companies accounted for more than half of all farmed fish escapes.
