Since the Kyoto Protocol came into force in 2005, Chile has had 31 projects in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

The Pesquera Pacific Star project is the first one to be developed by a company directly related to the salmon industry.

The initiative's goal is to provide thermal energy to Pesquera Pacific Star’s fishmeal and fish oil plant near Puerto Montt, using renewable biomass.

Some fossil fuel use will be replaced with byproducts from the forestry and agricultural industries to power a steam boiler at the plant, and the company says this will reduce emissions an average of 19,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent a year.
