A letter sent to executives at the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), WWF, Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) and IntraFish by mangrove campaigner Alfredo Quarto questions the angle with which the industry is approaching Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS).
Quarto asks why, aside from addressing the effect these shrimp disease outbreaks have on the industry and consumer, there is no discussion over how these diseases are affecting wild fish and shrimp stocks.
"Can we assume, as seems 'the fashion of ignorance and apathy' that our oceans' wild fisheries -- including shrimp and finfish -- might not themselves be suffering from contact with these same deadly ailments proliferated by the dense stocking measures and open system approaches instituted by careless industry?" he said.
