Ecuador’s government is supporting the sector as it moves to produce higher value seafood products.
Ecuador’s tuna industry started out making and exporting canned seafood. Companies now have shifted to pouch packaging and other value-added products such as salads, gourmet products and those prepared with different sauces.
These mostly Ecuadoran companies are using local capital to finance growth, a change from the past when companies operating in Ecuador were from the United States and Europe.
Still, a prominent foreign company in the business is Spain-owned Conservas Isabel.
