“We have seen a worldwide crisis taking place that has had a serious influence on our business, as there has been less spending on food products,” Carsten Beith, managing director of Hanstholm-based trader Fon Fisk, told IntraFish.
“Cod had been priced too high. If we go back two to three years, there was no way that fresh fish could compete with saltfish producers for raw material. Today that’s not the case. We have also seen an influx of pangasius and tilapia and although we feel that we can compete successfully against farmed Asian products, the consumer needs to know that these are not healthy products,” said Beith.
