The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of Alaska’s salmon fishery: One group, the Alaska Salmon Processors Association (ASPA), has it but will only share it this year for a price; another group, the Pacific Seafood Processors Association (PSPA), wants to get a separate duplicate copy of it and share it with one and all; Alaska’s governor says it is unacceptable to add to the state’s financial burden by making it oversee two separate processes for the same certification; Alaska Department of Fish & Game officials say they would rather deal with just one certification but will handle one or two client groups if they have to; and the MSC has lost its voice and isn't saying anything – except the tired phrase about certificate sharing being a “business decision.”
