The process of rebuilding the flatlined pole-and-line industry off Papa New Guinea and the Soloman Islands is taking shape following a campaign led by industry and NGO Greenpeace and will bear fruit by 2011, IntraFish was told.
“It looks very good for both countries that pole and line fishery can commence again,” said Andrew Bassford, director of operations at Fishes. ” I think in the next 18 months there’ll be product on the shelf.”
Around 12 percent of global tuna fisheries employ the pole-and-line catch method, which has reduced bycatch rates but increased labor costs and a lower catch rate.
