Using software developed by Pefa B.V., which created the first internet sales system for fresh fish, shrimp could be bought through an advance bids system, explained Company Director Gijsbert Spek, based at the Scheveningen auction.
“It’s very much like eBay,” said Spek. “Fishermen simply set a reserve price ahead of landing at the market and interested buyers can bid on it. If they meet that reserve price then the shrimp is sold ahead of the morning’s auction.”
If bids fail to reach the reserve price, the shrimp will be placed in the real-time online auction as usual.
