Jan Kaptijn, managing director of seafood distributors Seafood Connection (Seacon), told IntraFish players need to concentrate on building a stronger image for cod in Europe, rather than accusing pangasius of damaging prices in the sector.
“It’s useless to put negative energy in blaming the pangasius sector. You can use this time better for rebuilding your own products/brand name and markets,” Kaptijn said.
Netherlands-based Seafood Connection buys around 20,000 metric tons of pangasius each year, and Kaptijn said he believes the emphasis needs to move away from pangasius as a scapegoat for low prices in the industry.
