Urk-based company Wilma BV fought off competition from processor Kennemervis Group and supplier Anova Food to claim the prize, and said the next stage could be a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) eco-label assessment.
Hendrik Romkes, of the Wilma BV fishing company in Urk, slashed his weekly fuel usage from 31,885 liters to 21,600 liters by making a series of innovative technical adjustments, including installing cruise control and reducing speed and horse power.
Romkes hopes to get the UK88 certified to the MSC standard to get a premium for his responsibly-caught fish.
