Innovative fishing methods that replace the traditional and often criticized beam trawl gear could create fuel savings of 25-50 percent within the next three to five years, said fisheries expert Kees Taal of the Wageningen University Research Center, the Netherlands.

“This saving can be made with the same size fleet that we have now,” said Taal, who explained that fuel now accounts for 30 percent to 50 percent of the beam trawl fleet’s costs.

“Fishermen can now see a new future for the flatfish fisheries that offers much improved financial results.”
