Icelandic fishing company Vinnslustödinn, based in the Westmann Islands, has sacked eleven crewmen from its three vessels after they failed a drugs test.
The decision has provoked a debate in Iceland after the eleven men summarily lost their jobs on the spot when traces of banned substances were found in urine tests that were carried out with no prior warning.
Crewmen are required to sign an agreement as a condition of employment, setting out that they agree to take part in surprise drugs tests.
