“Since the price rises in recent years the Norwegian mackerel has simply become too expensive for the main market of Japan,” Ivar Strommen, Domstein’s sales manager told IntraFish.

IntraFish met Strommen in Brussels last week just after he had returned from a two-week long business trip to China and Japan.

The retail segment in Japan is now – to an increasing degree - taking Norwegian mackerel off the shelves and pulling out of planned campaigns for promotion of Norwegian mackerel. It has become so expensive it is no longer selling.
