“The [eco-label] debate took almost 10 years in Norway, with the industry nearing losing any opportunity it could have to influence the formation of the criteria," he said. "Rather than exploiting a major marketing opportunity, the first Norwegian fisheries to be certified are actually the world’s 30th.”

At this point no one really knows how well eco-labels work in segmenting the seafood market, though the MSC’s recent success are making a compelling case, Asche said.
