Shrimp farmers in the northwest state of Sinaloa reported losses in excess of MXN 1.5 billion (€86.8 million/$116.2 million) after mass mortalities on shrimp farms during the first harvest of the year, reported Parand Oreja.

Sergio Miguel Contreras, president of the Aquaculture Health Board in the city of Guasave, said in one area with 3,000 hectares of ponds, more than 70 percent of them had problems, adding mortalities were also above 70 percent, some of them shortly after stocking, others later in the cycle.
