A UK fishermen’s leader has warned of “horrific”consequences if the forthcoming discards ban is allowed to lead to the earlyclosure of fisheries.

His warning came after a high level conference in Brusselslast week on implementing common fisheries policy (CFP) reforms where top commission officials sent outthe unequivocal message that it will be up to the EU member states and the newregional bodies to sort out the details of how to make the discards ban work inpractice.

Barrie Deas, CEO of the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations (NFFO) who was at the meeting,strongly attacked their stance.
