There's been a lot of outrage from those in the seafood industry following the more than 13 percent reduction in the Canadian cold water shrimp quota, to 115,891 metric tons, but members of Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) told IntraFish the reductions had to be made.

"The Department consulted with industry and recognizes the potential impact of declining stocks and TAC (Total Allowable Catch) reductions for harvesters and their communities in the Atlantic region," said Frank Stanek, DFO's media relations manager.
