Economy Minister Hugo Lavados said the government had “an ambitious target for 2012, but it’s evident there’s no sense in proposing that timescale due to the crisis in the salmon farming industry, which accounts for over 90 percent of the aquaculture sector’s exports.”

Salmon is Chile’s No. 1 aquaculture product with export revenues of over $2.4 billion (€1.6 billion) in 2008. However, the crisis caused by the ISA virus has hit the sector hard, leading to a 30 percent drop in the industry’s total exports this year.
