The association’s Jesper Larsen told IntraFish sister publication Fishing News International the industry was going down this route to survive.
“We have to prove we can fish responsibly,” he said.
The sandeel fishery’s planned assessment is in response to increasing demand from the aquaculture industry for sustainably-sourced fish feed.
Larsen says there's increasing public awareness of the “chain of production," which means the industrial fishing sector will have to look to eco-labeling.
