Romanian shipbuilder, Damen Shipyards Galati, has completed the first of three fishery inspection surveillance and research vessels ordered by the Angolan ministry of agriculture, rural development and fisheries.

The triple order reflects the Angolan government's desire "to strengthen its knowledge of and control over its rich fishing grounds," Damen said in a press release.

The vessel (Damen FISV 6210) now completed, Ngola Kiluange, is 62 meters long.

Another vessel of this type is being built at the Galati Shipyard in Romania, while the third vessel commissioned will be a smaller, 28-meter long fishery research vessel (Damen FRV 2810).

The threefold order is the fruit of a "unique collaboration" between Damen Shipyards, the Dutch government and ING Bank, where the latter two co-financed the project, Damen said.

The fishing sector is one of Angola’s largest economic sectors, but its territorial waters "are extremely alluring for illegal fishing," the Romanian company said.
