EU Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki’s period in office is ending early this year, when all EU commissioners will be replaced. Industry leaders accused her of favoring the greens with an eye to continuing her career with a plum job with one of the big environmental foundations.
Bertie Armstrong, chief executive at the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) said his personal view is Damanaki was “the worst fisheries commissioner we’ve seen for a long time.” He described her as being “out of control” in her eagerness to resolve the mackerel dispute with Iceland and Faroe before she is leaving office.
