Peruvian fishmeal and oil producer Copeinca on Tuesday refuted a report in Norwegian newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv that the group has been fined for overfishing.

The company said it is "respectful" of all government quotas, and noted that its fines have stemmed from harvests of juvenile anchovy catches. Peruvian authories allow 10 percent of a company's total harvest to be incidental juvenile fish.

The paper characterized that incidental juvenile catch as overfishing, which is incorrect, Copeinca said.

Under the regulations, juvenile catches are reported for each catch and vessel, and fines are given with each trip reporting over 10 percent juvenile catch.
