On Monday, 115 employees at Cooke Aquaculture’s Chilean subsidiary, Salmon Cupquelan, went on strike after they say the company refused their demands for salary increases, transportation and insurance, according to Chilean media.
According to El Divisadero, the salmon workers, members of the Cupquelan Workers Union, met on Oct. 11, 12, and voted to strike.
Union leader Pablo Veloso said the workers are united in their decision and “will mobilize with everything to get what they consider fair.”
“This vote is a message to the managers of the company who did not want to open a fair negotiation,” Veloso said.
