The company last week closed its cod nursery in Belleoram, along the south coast of Canada's Newfoundland and Labrador province, and is looking for new jobs for the three workers at the hatchery.

"We have made a significant investment over the years; we've been at it over six years in two places, Newfoundland and New Brunswick, and we had hatchery in Nova Scotia for some time," Cooke spokeswoman Nell Halse told IntraFish on Wednesday.

"We've been investing in this a long time and we still really believe in the future of cod farming, but because of outside circumstances the economics just are not there today.
