“What we’re seeing at the show is concern,” Don Kelley, vice president of Western Edge’s southern division, told IntraFish. “Buyers want to know about melamine. And they ask, ‘Didn’t Alabama ban catfish?’”

Melamine made news when the chemical was found in tainted pet food. Then, it was found in feed distributed to fish farms. Fluoroquinolones are often used to treat infection diseases and is banned by the FDA.

Because of the concern, Miami-based Western Edge, which supplies cobia, catfish and tilapia fillets from Hainan, China, has stepped up quality control, Kelley said.
