Now active as an independent fishery scientist, Jens Christian Holst (pictured left), formerly a scientist at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), is engaged with a project involving Norwegian fishermen’s organizations Fiskebat, Pelagisk Forening and Norges Fiskarlag to bring new assessment methods to research into Atlanto-Scandian herring.

For a variety of reasons, the project has grown from grassroots beginnings, and the work is being largely funded by the industry itself, stemming from a widespread dissatisfaction with the official work done on herring.
