Companies take cautious approach to GM salmon

With debate on the subject of GM salmon at a fever pitch in the United States, IntraFish asked some salmon farming companies and salmon farming organizations what their stance is on the subject.

At this point, all these groups say they do not support efforts to grow GM salmon, but some left the door open, pending regulatory approval and consumer demand.

Marine Harvest says it follows guidelines set out by the International Salmon Farmers Association (ISFA), as does Canada-based Cooke Aquaculture.

The ISFA policy, adopted at the group's 17th general meeting, says: “In accordance with sound environmental practice, the ISFA firmly rejects transgenic salmon production.”
