Three non-governmental organizations (NGOs) -- Consumers Union, the Center for Food Safety, and Food and Water Watch -- filed the complaint Wednesday with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The groups want seafood companies to stop using the word “organic” until the United States adopts rules governing what can be called organic seafood.

Henry Lovejoy, CEO of New Hampshire-based EcoFish, told IntraFish the petition isn’t unexpected, but he called it “significant news.”

“This will probably be taken very seriously by the FDA and the USDA,” Lovejoy said.
