British supermarket chain Waitrose announced last week the outcome of a process begun in March, where together with the Marine Stewardship Council, (MSC), aquaculture company Aquascot and U.K. Soil Association, it began to increase the pressure for sustainability in the seafood industry.
In addition to Waitrose having set itself a deadline of the year 2010 for purchasing only salmon raised on sustainable fish feed, the retail chain has, over time, decided it will only buy haddock and cod caught on lines, phased out fish caught by bottom trawlers because they ruin the sea bottom, phased out North Sea cod and haddock, and halted sales of wild Atlantic salmon.
