In the United States the demand for fresh tilapia has never been higher, which is why Colombia producer Juan-Carlos Libreros began exporting fish to Miami earlier this year.
For nearly a decade Libreros has been farming the popular fish in his native Colombia, selling it as fresh fillets to supermarket chains and restaurants. Seeing the rising consumption in the United States, he began the process of creating an exporting business now known as PezCo Aquafarming.
As the business development executive for the company, Libreros secured partnerships with one of the largest Colombian tilapia farmers, Piscicola Botero, to import up to 300,000 pounds of fish monthly to meet the sales demand from US retailers, foodservice and distributors.
