According to Ivan Lopez, general manager of Vigo-based cod producer Pesquera Ancora SL, 60 percent-owned by Aker Seafoods Denmark, supermarkets are exploiting their stranglehold on the market and even causing fishermen to suspect their own employers of foul play.

“Cod prices have been dropping enormously at our level but actually rising in stores. I’ve worked at all levels of fishing and I don’t see that as honest in any way,” he told Fishing News International.

“It’s not possible that we drop our prices by 50 percent and the prices in the supermarkets go up 5 [percent], 10 percent.
