Farming of cleaner fish has progressed almost magically in the Norwegian aquaculture industry, according to Erlend Waatevik of Skretting.

“It’s almost like the proverbial fairytale how farming of cleaner fish has unfolded. Just half the time has been used on developing this segment,” said Waatevik during the Sats Marint conference held in Bergen last week.

He stressed the whole impetus was provided by producers’ two most feared words: Salmon lice and resistance.

“The ‘toolkit’ is practically empty, and that’s why the cleaner fish is coming into its own dynamically, even though it’s been there for ages.
