However, few are now expected to survive due to the Australian winter setting in, bringing sea temperatures to around 11 degrees Celcius to 12 degrees Celcius.
The southern bluefin tuna fingerlings were first transferred to sea in March this year, in Clean Seas Tuna’s first successful transfer of farmed fingerlings.
“It was always anticipated that survival was unlikely as winter temperatures arrived, hence the continued survival is remarkable and builds on the significant knowledge gained for future trials and ultimate commercialization,” the company said.
