Tilapia production remained generally stable in 2008 at 1.11 million metric tons, compared to the 1.13 million metric tons in 2007.
Industry sources reported that tilapia production in 2009 is estimated at 1.15 million metric tons, the U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service reported.
"The slow growth in production reflected the weak demand from major tilapia importing markets resulting from the global economic decline since 2008," the report said.
"Tilapia production is expected to continue growing in the near future in response to recovering demands for China’s tilapia products by foreign markets in particular the United States, together with increasing domestic consumption."
