In 2010, it looked like Norway could forget about developing Chinese seafood market. The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, a move the Chinese government took as an insult.
As a result, China took strict measures against Norway’s imports -- including seafood.
Salmon was one of the biggest victims. By October 2010, Norwegian exporters sent 10,793 metric tons of salmon to the country, worth around NOK 380 million (€51.5 million/$67 million).
The next year, after China started its crackdown, those numbers had plummeted, to 5,756 metric tons in exports worth NOK 167 million (€23 million/$29 million).
