The roundtable work kicked off by stating the main aim, which is to particularly address the labor and social situation of salmon industry workers, to coordinate public investment, and articulate a set of measures allowing the various regional governments to act proactively

Union leaders requested the current labor situation be decreed a “labor disaster,” but authorities declined to issue such a declaration, saying the situation fails to meet the condition of a natural or employment disaster.

Union leaders made the following petitions to government representatives to improve their current labor situation:

  • To request salmon companies to establish a discharge clause allowing workers laid off to be reinstated when the current difficult economic and productive situation has been resolved;
  • To work out authorization with salmon companies for workers to have access to labor training allowing for reconversion or specialization in some of the courses that the national employment and training department (SENCE) is creating and developing
