The strike of more than 1,000 workers at the plant in Ancud started Wednesday after workers learned they would not be paid the annual production bonus their union negotiated in the last contract.
The company said it couldn't pay the bonuses because of poor profit in 2008 and the consequences of the infectious salmon anemia (ISA) virus, but the workers enforced their rights and decided to go ahead with a strike despite threats of layoffs.
Based on the information provided by the union, the bonus should be $483 (€373).
