Chilean salmon companies yielded big volumes in the first half of 2013, but the associated costs of health issues in the sector has meant most did it at a loss, reports Diario Financiero.

Various consultants and companies such as Mainstream and Multifoods, predict the supply of Atlantic salmon from Chile this year will grow between 26 and 29 percent, while the average total global supply of this species will be up only 1 percent. At the enterprise level, AquaChile announced a 46 percent increase in production in the third quarter and other companies are expected to follow.

In contrast, Marine Harvest, Multifoods and Australis have already stated that their annual production will fall very marginally.

The country's biggest producer -- AquaChile -- took a loss of $33 million in the first half of 2013.
