The Chilean hake fishery has been in decline for the better part of the last 10 years, and it saw yet another low point this summer, when it quietly withdrew from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) assessment process in August.

Sonapesca, the industry body overlooking the process, is talking about a fishery "in crisis," with the capture almost dropping to one third from the total allowable catch of 121,200 metric tons in 2001.
