Representatives from SalmonChile said they appreciated the proposal by the government to introduce new practices for the use of antibiotics in salmon farming, announced Tuesday by the Ministry of Economy.

Producers want to reduce the use of antibiotics, and decisions about the issue already been made inside SalmonChile, SalmonChile President Cesar Barros said.

Antibiotics are a tool that can be used to control bacterial but not viral diseases such as infections salmon anemia (ISA), he said.

“It’s also important to highlight that although fish receive antibiotics, the people that consume salmon worldwide do not ingest antibiotics too, as there are strict periods of non-use after they are first administered to when the fish are harvested,” Barros said.
