Chile in 2008 reported hake catches of 36,000 tons and exports worth $31 million (€23 million). The fishery supports 22,000 jobs, the group said.

“We’ve informed the authorities that we’re working on showing that we meet all the requirements of the London-based international fisheries certifier Marine Stewardship Council (MSC),” said Carlos Vial, CEO of Pesquera Friosur.

Chile’s Fisheries Undersecretary Jorge Chocair established a working group to oversee the certification process.
